Maybe it’s my nostalgia for this time, but this era of more care-free, laid-back, and vibrant games feels all too distant in 2023. My PS2 meant everything to me, in time I’d come to love many genres, characters, and series, but these foundations have stayed with me after all these years, and they definitely inform my tastes even to this day. Just missing out on the advent of 3D gaming, for the record I’m a 1998 baby, meant that my formative experiences in vidya games came through Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, and Spyro. Harkening back to the early period of 3D gaming that saw the mascot platformer dominate the major release cycles, Hi Fi Rush could be the start of something special if its success so far is anything to go by. In an age of expansive 50-100 hour adventures full of mind-numbingly dull side quests and bloated story beats it’s incredibly refreshing to experience something like Hi-Fi Rush. Though the original metronome system in the game was simply a blinking orb, Tango Gameworks made it a character on its own, adding the recurring theme of black cats on their games.Hi-Fi Rush is by its own merits a brilliant game, delivering a punchy 10-12 hour experience that never overstays in welcome. 808 is inspired by the director John Johannas' black cat, who has a habit of perching on his shoulder much like she does.If 808 has the Traditional costume equipped, she performs a folk dance as cherry blossom petals fly by.If 808 has the Chai costume equipped, she'll play with an air guitar while being encouraged by him, until he picks her up and she wriggles herself out of his grasp. If 808 has her Roquefort costume equipped, it'll add an extra animation where she (harmlessly) attacks Chai with the boss' high-speed slashes instead, before going back to her spot.Additionally, she gains new animations in DLC costume packs: 808 has three default animations when Chai plays with her at the Hideout - licking him in return for pets briefly playing patty-cake with him, before getting bored and going back to her pillow and turning into orb form for him to throw upwards a few times. However, 808's 3D model is never shown with black eyes. It seems that 808's eyes were planned to turn black when no one speaks over her, as this can be noticed in all the animated scenes. If nobody is speaking over her, her colors are blue by default. When the team contacts Chai, she'll change her colors to blue (Peppermint), green (Macaron), yellow (CNMN) and red (Korsica)."Hibiki" was also the game's working title, is featured in a lot of Chai's clothes and Korsica's sneakers, one of the Special Attacks, and is still found written on game files. The “響” kanji (read as “hibiki” in Japanese) on 808's collar can represent different things such as: echo, sound, resound, ring, vibrate.808 gets her name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine, this is also where her sound effects come from.As a side effect, their synchronization creates a repeating signal that can be hijacked for her hidden temporal displacement technology, essentially allowing Peppermint and any other of their allies to teleport next to Chai temporarily.Ĩ08 is not without her tricks by herself, and aside from being able to stun most enemies through cuteness alone with her Steal the Show Special Attack, she can use her sharp claws to destroy machinery - if she can get close enough, be it by herself or through the 808 Gigawatt Cat Attack. However, when Chai accidentally pet her the first time, he unlocked a mysterious Host Synchronization ability, allowing her to enhance his attacks with beams and stronger impacts, as well as acting as his metronome. Although on some occasions, 808 performs gestures such as mimicking karate poses.Ĩ08 is mostly a surveillance bot, acting as Peppermint's eyes and ears and with hacking ability to infiltrate various sections of Vandelay Technologies. Besides this, she normally acts as a regular cat. Ever since synchronizing with Chai, she has taken a great liking towards him, often posing with him, emoting and sharing reactions to the events in front of them.
